A
silk duvet from Multree can change your world by
transforming the way you sleep.
A silk-filled duvet with a pure silk cover may sound
like the ultimate in A-lister luxury but, as well as
being unbelievably light, soft and sensual, it will have
some other amazing qualities. Because of the unique
nature of silk it will be hypoallergenic, breathable and
chemical-free.
Chinese silk traded via the historic Silk Road was a
prized commodity amongst the Romans in Europe as long
ago as 53BC. It has never lost its appeal as the purest
and finest of fabrics - the diamonds and pearls of
materials. In China and Japan silk has historically been
valued in the top echelons of society, not only for the
creation of beautiful clothing but also, as simply the
best of bedding materials.
Now Multree are bringing silk duvets, sheets, pillows
and pillowcases to Europe. They are manufactured in
China by a small, family-run business based in Hangzhou,
North of Shanghai. The silk is produced without the use
of sprays and other chemicals so that it will not
irritate the skin or harm the environment. Silk thread
is made up of 18 amino acids which are also found in the
human body. It is probably because of this unique
quality that silk is regarded as being an anti-irritant
and is increasingly used in medical treatment [i] Its
natural smoothness, lightness and ability to absorb and
then ‘wick’ away moisture so that it does not remain
damp, has proved very effective in alleviating arthritis
and irritable skin conditions such as dermatitis. Next
to the skin, silk is even claimed to have anti-aging
effects.
But perhaps silk’s most amazing property is that it is
hypoallergenic - dust mites will not colonise it. The
Daily Mail [ii] recently raised awareness about this
issue ‘Britons are spending their nights under filthy
duvets packed with dust mites, skin scales and
fungus…Researchers found out that the average bed
contained up to 20,000 live house dust mites’ and
‘that synthetic pillows and bedroom radiators may be
responsible for up to a quarter of exzema cases. Doctors
from the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust
and the University of Nottingham looked at a group of
more than 1,300 children to compare home environments
and the incidence and risk of exzema. They discovered
“synthetic pillows and bedroom radiators increase the
risk of a child developing the skin condition, which now
affects up to one in six children and one in 12
adults”
Silk duvets, pillows and sheets From Multree are a
natural solution to these issues of dust mites, fungal
spores and allergic conditions including rhinitis,
exzema and asthma. Other manufacturers of silk duvets
cannot make this claim as their duvets are encased in
cotton, not silk. Multree duvets are filled using long
fibre mulberry silk and are cased in habotai silk. The
naturally breathable quality of silk ensures that they
are cool in summer and warm in winter and do not retain
dampness.
As well as a complete size range of duvets, Multree
supply silk pillows and silk bed-linen in colours
ranging from feminine pinks and natural ivories to
bachelor-pad black.
